We are at that point in the year where we are both entering our final trimester of the school year and also planning for next year. I will be sharing updates with you as they are available. This week our budget passed a vote from our staff, and with funding help from Friends of Thurgood Marshall, we are lucky to keep roughly the same amount of supports in place for our students. Our budget will be tight, and several of our staff are writing grants to help fund projects. We have learned that we will have a .2 (one day a week) reduction in our Multilingual teaching staff. Additionally, with the district’s announcement that they will keep the 2nd–5th grade current Highly Capable model for three more years, we have learned that we will have two extra classrooms next year, and that class sizes will be large. These extra classrooms mean we will also receive an additional half-time PE teacher. We will be doing a bit of hiring in April. We welcome a parent or two to participate in hiring teams. There is a district-required training for this—let me know if you are interested in learning more.
Our classes are getting started on their ChangeMaker project! The ChangeMaker project allows each class the opportunity to learn more about an important person of color who has made contributions to our culture. Students will be learning about scientists, mathematicians, political figures, activists, artists, sports figures, and some of our local heroes, too. Classes were given suggestions for people to study, and each class got to choose the ChangeMaker they are interested in. Each class will make a display about their ChangeMaker, and at the end of March, our school will have a gallery walk so that students can view all the projects. Ask your child about the ChangeMaker they are studying.
Finally, at the end of this week we will be wishing Ms. Davidheiser goodbye as she heads into her maternity leave to welcome a new baby girl into her family. She will surely be missed around our school! Ms. Andrea Dailey will be joining us for the remainder of the school year as our Assistant Principal Substitute. Your child will get to know Ms. Dailey on the playground, at lunch, and in their classes. Ms. Dailey will be helping students with problem-solving and discipline, so you may hear from her as she partners with you, too. Ms. Dailey is a veteran educator, and in addition to being a principal, she has taught at every grade level and as a special educator. We are fortunate to have her join us to finish out the year.
Global Reading Challenge

Our Global Reading Challenge Team, The Flying Pigs, competed last Friday with other teams from across the school district. Students read all the Global Reading Challenge books and then answered questions. The Flying Pigs tied for 2nd place! They missed first place by 1 question.
Congratulations to all the team members:
