Community Night

Thursday, March 18th, 2021, Volume 15 Issue 82

Community Night Right now parents may have a lot of questions that we don’t yet have answers to such as what will happen in Seattle Schools as a result of Governor Inslee’s decree on Friday that schools must return to some level of in-person services. Until the bargaining between Seattle Schools and the teachers’ union is complete and an agreement is reached, we will not have answers. As I write this on Monday, my hope is that by the time the Pup Press comes to you on Thursday we will have more to tell you! What I CAN tell you about is the fabulous evening of literacy we are planning for you on Thursday, April 8 from 6PM – 7:20! Community Night is an annual TM Tradition. This year as we started planning, we knew that we would need to come up with a good virtual idea that would engage everyone. We will be hosting a menu of sessions for students AND their Parents!! Session 1 (6-6:20 PM) and Session 3 (7:00-7:20 PM) are aimed at students, although the whole family is welcome. During Session 2 (6:25-6:55 PM), students will attend a book talk with Hena Khan, author of Amina’s Song, Under My Hijab, Crescent Moons and Pointed Minarets and more! (https://www.henakhan.com/ . During this time, we will also be offering sessions specifically for parents, to help you better understand how to support your child’s literacy at home.

Teachers are planning session now, but here is a sneak peek of student sessions: Read aloud with Ms. Huss (Pre-K to 1st grade), “Warrior Cats Club” with Ms. Whitney, Mad Libs Mania with Ms. Jensen, “Yes…and! Stories” with collaborative story writing and dramatic play with Ms. Amsden and Ms. Hail (Pre-K to 1st), and “But I don’t have any Non-fiction texts!” with Ms. Egelhoff. Parents may choose to learn how to “Build in Reading Comprehension practice to parent-led read-alouds” with Ms. Reddy or make a “Joyful Noise” with Ms. Whitney and poems for two voices! We will have the complete menu of choices with Teams links for you as we get a bit closer to the event.

In addition to the fun festivities on April 8, each class is also setting a reading goal that they will work towards over the next month. Your child’s teacher will send you more information on that so you know what they are working on. As each class achieves their goal, students will each win a book!
