End of Year Notes

Thursday, June 3rd, 2021, Volume 15 Issue 92

We are very close to the ending of this crazy year! Superintendent Brent Jones has let us know that we will be back in person 5 full days a week next year – and hopefully vaccinations for elementary students will be available around the start of next year, too! As this year winds down, there are some important reminders to attend to.

Spring Assessments: Your child’s teacher has been working to assess your child’s progress in math and English Language Arts. The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction has granted Washington State a waiver for the usual standardized tests administered in the spring; instead, students in 4th and 5th grade next year will take a shortened version of the Smarter Balanced Assessment this fall. Special Education students who usually take the WA-AIM, will complete that either this spring or next fall.

End of Year Progress Reports will be available to view in your Source Account by July 7, 2021. For information on how to set-up or access your Source account, go to: https://www.seattleschools.org/departments/dots/support_training_forms/source .

Returning student technology:

Student laptops, iPads, keyboards, and hotspots all need to be returned prior to the end of the school year. There are no fees or fines to be collected on broken or lost equipment. Instead, the district is asking that families complete a Return Form and tuck it inside the laptop or case so our tech staff knows what needs to be repaired. They will be working hard this summer to get equipment ready for use again this fall! Students enrolled in district summer programs may keep their devices and hotspots through July.

Return Dates: In-person students may return their device to their teacher any day the last week of school, June 14-18. Just send your student’s device to school with them along with the Return Form (hard copies of the form will be sent home with in-person students.)

Remote students may return their device on June 18 between 1:30-3:30 or Monday, June 21 between 8-3:30. We will have hard copies of the Return Form available to you when you drop off the devices. (If you need to return it earlier, you may do so, we just want your child to be able to have access through the last day of school).

June 18 – 1-hour Early Release!: Historically, SPS has released all students 1 hour early on the last day of school, which is June 18 this year. All Elementary and K-8 schools will dismiss in-person and remote students at 1:30 PM on June 18. The AM cohort will maintain the regular start and end times of 8 AM – 10:45 AM. The PM cohort, both in-person and remote students, will be dismissed 1 hour early, so hours for PM students on June 18 will be 11:45 – 1:30 PM.

Move-a-thon – Hopefully your child had the opportunity to get in 30 consecutive minutes of movement for the Move-a-thon! Families have until June 6 to turn in any funds collected (either by sending them to school in-person or through donations on our PayPal site at

https://tinyurl.com/ywxj9mm4 . Thanks so much to all of you who have contributed so far!

Finally, many parents start to wonder which teachers will be teaching which grades next year around this time. I will publish our teaching line-up in our last issue of the Pup Press on June 17. We do not take requests for specific teachers, but if you would like to send an email describing the type of learning environment your child is most successful in, we will consider that information as we make placement decisions for next year. You may send this information to Cherese Williams at cnwilliams@seattleschools.org.
