Attention 5th grade families! Get ready for an unforgettable sleepaway camping trip to the beautiful Camp Orkila on Orcas Island from October 23rd–25th. Nestled in nature's embrace, this scenic location provides the perfect setting for an unforgettable outdoor experience.
During our time at Camp Orkila, we will immerse ourselves in a variety of engaging outdoor classes. Almost all our learning will take place outside, utilizing the camp's beautiful outdoor learning areas. We'll explore the beach, build a rope bridge, try archery, conquer the climbing tower, zoom down the zip line, and more! Camp Orkila is all about building strong group dynamics and creating a supportive school community.
At Orkila, fostering strong group dynamics is a priority. They strive to break down cliques and build a sense of community that will strengthen our bond as a school. Through various team-building exercises and shared experiences, we will learn the value of cooperation, empathy, and understanding. Camp Orkila is not just about having fun; it's about coming together as a united and supportive group.
To make this trip a success and ensure the safety and well-being of our students, we will need chaperones. If you're interested in accompanying us on this exciting adventure, mark your calendars. Chaperoning is a wonderful opportunity to be part of your child's growth and create lasting memories. We will be conducting a mandatory chaperone orientation on Tuesday, October 8th at 5:00pm. This session will cover the responsibilities, expectations, and necessary preparations for our trip. If you are interested in chaperoning, please email Cat Davidheiser (Ms. D) directly at csdavidheise@seattleschools.org.
On September 30th, additional information and forms will be sent home with your student. Make sure to check your student's backpack to ensure you don't miss any important details.
Camp Orkila is just around the corner, and we can't wait to embark on this incredible journey together. If you have any questions or need further information, please feel free to contact your student’s classroom teacher or our assistant principal, Ms. D.
Contacting Children at School
Parents—many of you have had questions about contacting your child at school. Here is the info from our Family Handbook about this. You can find our full Family Handbook on our website at https://marshalles.seattleschools.org/resources/family-handbook/.
Cell Phones and Electronic Devices
We recognize that many students carry cell phones or other devices to communicate with parents before/after school. Students are not allowed to use cell phones, SMART watches, or other electronic communication devices during school hours. If a student has an emergency call to make, he/she/they must first obtain permission from an adult to use a school phone.
If the device is a distraction to instruction or learning, the teacher may take it away. The first time an adult takes away a cell phone, the phone/device goes to the office and the child picks it up from the principal there at the end of the day. When this happens a second time, the principal keeps the cell phone/device until the parent/guardian can collect it. The school is not responsible for any lost or stolen cell phones or other electronic items, and therefore will not investigate missing items.
