Fall Assessments

Thursday, October 7, 2021 Volume 16 Issue 5

Now that students are settling back into the routines of school, teachers have begun the processing of assessing skills. This is especially important considering the current pandemic. With so much happening in the lives of students and families, we cannot assume that education has been a consistent or straight forward process of each of our students. At Thurgood Marshall, we think carefully about assessment. We want to have accurate information about each of our students and we also want to engage in assessment that provides meaningful information to inform teacher instruction. While we have some choice in this as a school, most of our assessment is driven by district and state requirements. The amount of time spent on each assessment varies from 10 minutes to an hour or more, depending on the type of assessment and student grade level. These are not assessments that you need to prep your child for, but rather a way for us to gather information about their current level of understanding. Below are the assessments that your child may be engaging in this fall, depending on their grade level. WIDA Screener – September – given to students who are multilingual learners. Math Interviews – End of Sept – mid October – given to all students K-5, these interviews assess students mathematical problem-solving skills and are used to inform math instruction. Fountas and Pinnell (F&P) Reading assessment – 1st – 5th grade – 1st 2 weeks of October, used to pinpoint students’ reading level to guide reading choices and inform reading instruction. Early Literacy Screener – 1st and 2nd grade in the fall; Kindergarten in January – screens for areas of weakness associated with dyslexia. SIPPS Placement (Systematic Instruction in Phoneme Awareness, Phonics and Sight Words)– Mid October – This assessment is given to Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and some 3rd grade students and helps teachers target foundational reading skills. MAP (Measurement of Academic Progress) Testing – 1st-3rd Grade – Late Oct./Early Nov. – Reading and Math. Smarter Balanced Assessment -- 4th and 5th grade – first 2 weeks in November - ELA and Math. Your child’s teacher will review assessment results with you during Fall Conferences so that you can set goals together for your child’s growth this year. Of course, you may reach out to your child’s teacher any time you have an academic question or concern.
