Hi everyone! My name is Sasha Tyshler, and I am the Head Teacher here at Thurgood Marshall. What is a Head Teacher? I’m so glad you asked! I'm excited to take a moment to chat with you about my role. I often tell students that my job is to make sure that Thurgood Marshall is a safe place for students—both physically and emotionally—so everyone can learn. It's a position I really enjoy because it lets me be a big part of our school's heartbeat, directly influencing our learning environment and, more importantly, our students' experiences.
One of my main jobs is supporting student discipline. “Discipline” can sound a bit stern, but it's about guiding our students towards better choices and helping them learn from their experiences. To accomplish this, we use a restorative approach, focusing on repairing relationships and understanding the impact of actions. This approach has proven effective in creating a respectful and inclusive school culture.
An integral part of my day is staying connected with you, the parents and caregivers. Open lines between us are key. Whether it’s a quick update, a formal meeting, or just a casual chat, I'm here to talk about how your child is doing at school and work together. After all, you know your child best.
You'll also find me around the school a lot, keeping an eye on things. Whether it's in the halls, the classrooms, or out on the playground, my presence is all about ensuring a safe and positive space for everyone. It is about reinforcing appropriate conduct and fostering a sense of responsibility among our students. I love this part of my job because it keeps me connected with our students in their day-to-day school life.
When it comes to student conduct issues, I work on resolving these matters with fairness and always with the students' best interests at heart. At times there are students who may need support more frequently. For these students, I help lead our school’s Help Desk team. This team meets regularly throughout the school year and consists of many staff members. It is an opportunity for us to bring our various expertise together to develop clear plans of support for students.
Being involved in the broader aspects of school life is also part of my role. I'm often in meetings with our school’s Instructional Leadership Team and working closely with our Family Support Worker supporting Thurgood Marshall’s Levy work around racial equity. It's all about making our school the best it can be.
Most of all, I'm here for our students, teachers, and you, the parents and caregivers. My door (and email) is always open for any concerns, ideas, or even just a hello. Together, we can create a supportive and dynamic learning environment where every student can thrive.
