Parents In the Building!

Thursday, October 6, 2022 Volume 17 Issue 4

It has been great to be able to welcome parents back into the building this year. We are thrilled to have the extra support that volunteers bring us. For example, our Enrichment Team is made up of volunteers who solicit teachers for afterschool classes, organize a course catalog and on-line sign-ups, make sure that things run smoothly for students to get to classes, and make sure that students are safely picked up. (A BIG thank you to Katherine Bryant for leading the charge in working on this!). Volunteers help in so many other ways, too. Our Friends of Thurgood Marshall group (FTME) also organizes volunteers for school events like Picture Day and our Move-a-Thon. They help run our food pantry and organize donations for things like our Thanksgiving food drive. They organize fun events like game night. They are always looking for new members to help and join in the fun.

Our school would love to have you volunteer on the playground and in the lunchroom as you are able. Just email Cherese Williams at cnwilliams@seattleschools.org to help out. To volunteer, you need to fill out the Volunteer Application annually.

This ensures that volunteering in our school happens in a safe and predictable way. It is also district policy. You can find all the information you will need related to volunteering here: https://www.seattleschools.org/departments/volunteer/volunteer-application-process/ . Get signed up now so you will be prepared when a volunteer opportunity comes your way!

For any parent entering the building, whether you are a volunteer or a visitor, you MUST sign in at the office when you are on campus during school hours. It is important that we know who is in our building at all times and signing in helps to keep our building secure and safe for our students. If you come to help in one area of the school and then decide you want to stay for another reason, for example to have lunch with your child, it helps us if you check back into the office to let us know.

Visitors to the building are now allowed, too. Visitors are different than volunteers in that they are coming for a meeting, to ask a question in the office, or for a visit to campus for a specific purpose. For example, Ms. Howard-Powell, is having parents visit her class to see student family tree projects. Again, you must sign in at the office when you visit school. If you are coming to drop off your child or pick up your child at the beginning or end of the day, we ask that you wait outside for them. When parents cluster in the entry way or hallways, it makes it difficult for students to move easily through the hallways. This adds stress for both teachers and students and we want to avoid this. Please help us by avoiding entering the building at these times unless you have a specific need to come in. We appreciate our volunteers and our visitors! If you have questions about coming into the building for any reason, please feel free to reach out to our office staff at 206-252-2800. Thank you for your partnership with us this year!

Seattle Public School District is inviting all students, staff and community members to share why you appreciate your principal. They will give them a shout out on SPS social media channels, the district newsletter, and website.

Email a shout out for Principal May to goodnews@seattleschools.org.

Feedback Needed: School Board Directors Districts

SPS is currently redistricting the Seattle School Board director districts. During redistricting we will redraw the boundaries of existing school board director districts. This process will not impact where students go to school. More information about the school board district redistricting process and timeline. To ensure we understand the communities’ concerns about redistricting, we are asking for public feedback. Community members will also be able to provide public comments in-person and virtually during upcoming School Board meetings on Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Wednesday, Oct. 26. Please participate.
