Safety Planning at TM

Thursday, April 1st, 2021, Volume 15 Issue 84

In just a couple short days, we will be welcoming many more students back to school. We have been working hard on preparations to make sure things go smoothly for students and families. Our School Safety Team has created schedules for recess, bathroom usage (with a contingency plan for emergencies!), and arrival and dismissal. Despite our planning, we know that we will need to tweak our plans as we assess how things are going. Your feedback is important and helpful to us! Please feel free to reach out to our parent representatives on the Building Leadership Team, too. Reminder, your reps are: Tripti Baliga at triptibaliga@gmail.com and Neha Lohia at neha@lohia.org.

Ms. Matsui has been in on the safety planning, particularly thinking about our students’ social and emotional wellness as they return to school. We recently posted a video she created on our website. This would be a great thing to watch with your child: https://marshalles.seattleschools.org/about/calendar_and_news/news/in_person_safety

We are counting on your help with a smooth drop-off! The first thing you can do to help is to be sure to fill out the Daily Health Screening that will be emailed to you each morning. After you answer it the first time, you can choose to continue to receive it by email or have it texted to you. We ask that you complete the screening by 7 AM each morning, as we run a report first thing each morning to check that all students have been screened. We are not able to bring students into the classroom without a positive screening, so students who arrive at school without the screening filled out will wait in a room while parents are contacted so the screening can be completed. If you do forget, staff will be present with QR codes that you can scan with your phone at drop-off to complete the screening on site. This will have an impact on traffic flow during drop-off, so we appreciate your vigilance with taking care of this before arriving on campus. We will have few busses coming to school since transportation has been so greatly reduced. This means that we will have room along our bus lane for parent drop-off which will reduce congestion in our carpool loop. Here are some important notes about drop-off:

  • Please treat Irving Street (the street in front of our school) as a one-way street with traffic flowing from West to East. This will greatly help to reduce congestion. Enter on Irving from 24th Ave. S., drive West on Irving and then turn left onto 26th Ave. S.

  • Since we only have 1 bus in our AM session, we have spread out our drop-off area. Families with students in Ms. Kierstead, Ms. Sorenson and Ms. Jensen’s classes will drop them off at the West end of our campus (near the driveway down to our cafeteria and food site).

  • Ms. Damitio and Ms. Laughlin’s students can be dropped at the West end of our building.

  • Ms. Egelhoff and Ms. Gese’s students can be dropped just a bit West of our main entrance (being sure to leave room for our small busses right at our entrance).

  • Ms. Reddy’s students will be dropped off right in front of the YMCA building at the East end of our campus.

  • The drivers of all other students may either park in the parking lot or on-street parking and walk their child to their line-up spot OR drive through the carpool loop in front of the YMCA building to drop their child in the same way we have done in previous years.
