The Hour of Code: Inspiring Future Innovators at Our School

At Thurgood Marshall Elementary, we are fortunate to have been able to participate in the Hour of Code this year! The Hour of Code is a global movement designed to introduce students to the basics of computer science through fun, engaging activities. With over 180 countries participating, this initiative inspires millions of students to explore the world of coding—and we're thrilled we were able to bring this experience to our own classrooms. A big thank you to former TM Parent Suresh Chanmugam, from Code.org. He brought volunteers from Code.org and Amazon to come volunteer in four TM Classrooms to encourage students through coding activities. Students really enjoyed their experience!

What is the Hour of Code? The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer programming that allows students to create games, animations, and stories using easy-to-follow, kid-friendly platforms. Programs like Scratch, Code.org, and Tynker break down the complexities of coding into simple steps that are accessible to all learners, regardless of their experience level.

Why is Coding Important for Elementary Students? Coding teaches more than just how to use a computer. It fosters essential skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. Students learn to break down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps—a skill that benefits them in all subject areas and everyday life.

Moreover, coding introduces students to the concept of perseverance. When faced with challenges, they learn to troubleshoot, test solutions, and keep trying until they succeed. These are valuable life lessons that empower our students to become confident, resilient learners.

Preparing Students for the Future In an increasingly digital world, understanding technology is becoming as fundamental as reading and math. Computer science opens doors to exciting career opportunities and equips students with skills they'll need to thrive in the 21st century. By participating in the Hour of Code, we hope to spark an interest in technology and innovation that will last a lifetime.

How Can Families Support at Home? The learning doesn't have to stop after school! Platforms like Code.org, Scratch, and Tynker offer free resources for students to explore coding at home. Encouraging your child to experiment, create, and solve problems through coding is a great way to build confidence and reinforce their learning.

We invite you to ask your child about their Hour of Code experience and see what they created. Who knows—you might even learn a little coding yourself!

Thank you for your continued support as we nurture the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers. Together, we're preparing our students for a bright future filled with possibilities.
