What is PBIS?

Updated: Oct 7, 2021

Thursday, September 23, 2021, Volume 16 Issue

PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports.

It is a highly effective way to build students’ social-emotional-behavioral skills and reduce challenging behaviors.

The goal is to create a positive and safe school culture where students can feel safe and learn.

Teach Model Practice Reinforce

PBIS at Thurgood Marshall At Thurgood Marshall we have expectations for behavior throughout the school in places such as classrooms, playground, hallways. We teach, model, and practice these expectations with all our students and recognize students who meet them.

One form of recognition is a “Pup Point.” You may have heard your children telling you about them at home. Pup Points are a physical token to acknowledge a student or group of students for meeting expectations. These Pup Points are collected and counted, as students work towards a school-wide celebration. In fact, we have just reached out goal of 4,000 Pup Points, and will be celebrating with ice cream at lunch time!

PBIS at Home Appropriate behaviors at home support behaviors at school, and you’ll feel better when you focus on the positive. Decide on the expectations that are right for your home and your children and consider using language similar to Thurgood Marshall. Whatever you decide is right and okay for your home, it is important that you set the expectations and follow through. Remember that every child is different, even children in the same family living in the same home. What works for some children will not work for all! Take time to teach, model, and practice the expectations so everyone is clear on what they are. Once expectations are taught, find moments to give positive reinforcements, which can be as simple as verbal praise or a hug.

Picture Day is Coming!

Thurgood Marshall picture days are scheduled for Monday, October 4 and Tuesday, October 5. Families can preorder photos by visiting https://yuenluischools.com/thurgood-marshall-elementary/?rq=thurgood through Tuesday, October 12. After this date, photos will be processed for printing. Photos will be shipped to the school for distribution.

Families can order photos after the seven-day grace period by entering an online code, which is your student's school ID number. There is an additional cost to cover individualized printing, packaging, and shipping. Photos will be shipped directly to students' homes.

Families can order photos with check or cash (our photographers are unable to provide change) by returning the order form to the photographer on picture day. After picture day, all orders will need to be placed online.

Please note that a separate order is required for each student in the household.

Retake day is scheduled for Tuesday, November 9.

Please contact schoolsupport@yuenluischools.com with any questions. Thank you!

We are getting a lot of questions about changes to the Advanced Learning Program.

The main changes for the 2021-22 school year are:

  • All K-8 students will be automatically considered for Highly Capable or Advanced Learning eligibility this year.

  • Family referrals are no longer necessary, but all families will be given an opportunity to complete a survey to provide information about the cultural strengths of their child in October 2021.

Below find the new Advanced Learning flyer; this flyer has been translated in to: Amharic, Somali, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Oromo. Click on the language listed to view the translated flyer.

Contact information for advanced learning is on the flyer if you have questions regarding Advanced Learning services.
