Academic Parent Teacher Teams

Pup Press BROUGHT TO YOU BY Thurgood Marshall Elementary FTME

Academic Parent Teacher Teams- Katie May, Principal

Last fall, Thurgood Marshall was awarded a grant for the opportunity to participate in a parent engagement program called Academic Parent Teacher Teams with our preschool-2nd grade classes. This year, we are expanding the program to every grade! Academic Parent Teacher Teams (APTT) has been around for about 10 years and was created by a teacher named Maria Paredes in response to parents asking her how they could better support their children’s learning at home. Academic Parent Teacher Teams (APTT) reflect a true partnership between parents and teachers as they expand ways for collaboration to happen between home and school.

The model is research-based and aligns grade-level learning concepts, student performance data, and family-teacher communication. Educational research clearly documents that when families support student learning at home, there is a definite increase in grades, attendance, attitude, behavior, homework completion, social skills, state test results, and college attendance.

Most schools, including Thurgood Marshall have family conferences in the fall. The APTT model has three additional team meetings throughout the year. These team meetings are when the classroom teacher meets with all the families in the class together. Families have the opportunity to get to know each other better, which helps to build classroom community, and the teacher shares important grade level information and effective practices for parents to use at home with their children. Teachers show families effective home practices to support academic growth and progress and families receive everything necessary to do this practice at home with their child.

The APTT Model is spreading – it is now in schools across 16 states. Research on the model shows that student achievement is up in both math and reading for families who participate versus those who do not. The program is also tied to increasing student attendance and positive feelings about learning, as well as parent-teacher communication and parent confidence in supporting learning at home. Some schools also see a growth in community and decreasing discipline problems, as parents feel more comfortable to connect when problems happen between children.

Every teacher is currently working diligently with their colleagues in preparation for this important meeting with you. They are strategically selecting key grade level skill building activities and games that you can use at home with your student and will also help you set academic goals for your student. I want to personally invite you to join us by attending our first round of APTT meetings. We look forward to seeing you October 15th at 6:30 PM!

As you may have heard, in the interest of health and safety, we will not be returning to in-person activities this fall. But it's not all bad news. Your students CAN still learn to play an instrument this year as part of the the virtual-Zoom version of Jazz Prep Ensembles. They'll still pick their instrument, learn proper set up and care, and begin playing and reading music. Virtual Jazz Prep runs October 5th, 2020 – May 27th, 2021 (30 weeks). More info below to be shared with teachers and families.  Follow the link below for eight videos introducing you to the instrument options: flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass guitar, and drums. I recommend you to watch all of the videos to get a sense of what you might like to learn. After you have watched the videos, you may then go register for the class and indicate your top 3 instrument choices. We'll do our best to assign everyone their first choice, but equipment is limited.
